"Physics of the Infinites" Initiative - IPI
The IPI ("Physics of the Infinites" Initiative) is a research and training program designed to bring together researchers, teachers and students of the Sorbonne University Alliance around two intensive research axes: Plasma Physics and Physics of the Universe. The IPI thus covers a particularly broad spectrum of topics, including high energy physics, cosmology, particle physics, fusion, natural plasmas, non-equilibrium plasmas and many others. The ambition of the IPI is to irrigate these themes through core projects (specific to the physics of the Universe or to plasma physics), interface projects (unifying the physics of the Universe and plasma physics) but also opening projects where the physics of infinities is combined with transversal approaches in connection with the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The core of the IPI is made up of 9 internationally recognized physics laboratories (LPNHE, LPP, IAP, LPTHE, LULI, LPENS, LESIA, LERMA and INSP). The excellence of these laboratories is expressed through the complementarity of their expertise (observations, modeling, simulation, engineering, experiments), the reputation of its researchers, but also through an exceptional heritage of research infrastructures (eg, terrestrial and space astronomical observatories, particle accelerators, high intensity or electron lasers, ion beams).
The PLASMAScience Graduate school
The PLASMAScience Graduate school project focuses on plasmas, one of the 10 priority research areas of IP Paris. PLASMAScience brings together 7 laboratories from IP Paris - CMAP, CPHT, LOA, LPICM, LPP, LSI, LULI - and covers a wide range of plasma fields at the cutting edge of science and technology (thermonuclear fusion, plasmas natural in space and industrial applications such as nanotechnology, solar energy, medicine, agriculture, combustion, propulsion). Its 3 areas of research are: "Plasmas and Energy", "Plasmas and Space", "Plasmas and Society".
The PLASMAScience Graduate school aims to become one of the major international stakeholders in training and research in plasma physics. Its role is to combine high-level plasma research from these 7 laboratories with attractive training courses for IP Paris students by offering young talents the opportunity to work on a scientific project with dynamic and multidisciplinary research teams and to access its vast national and international scientific and academic network. Its objective is to train researchers and engineers of a very high level capable of meeting the new challenges of society.
